History of Sultanate of Sulu and North Borneo (Sabah)

-Formally established in 1401.
 

-Syed Abubakar or Al Sultan Shariful Hashim (a direct descendant of the Holy Prophet, Mohammad (S.W.A) as the first Sultan of Sulu.
 

-Center of Islamic influence in the Malayan region.

 

-The succession and ascension to the position of Sultan are adhered to in line with the historic royal lineage and genealogy of the Sulu Sultanate.

-In 18th century the Sulu Sultanate was the most powerful in the Malay world (J.F. Warren 1981). This was the period when the Sulu empire was at its peak.

-Commercial rivalries and the quest for political strategic control of the lucrative marine trade encouraged the entry of Spanish, Dutch, French, German and the British traders, which led to the downfall of the Sulu Empire.

 

​-1946 ,the first Philippine Republic came into power. The ancient centralized Islamic empire of the Sulu Sultanate was illegally annexed to the Philippines by virtue of the Philippine technical description of territorial boundary.

-An Islamic empire with sovereign power and territories extending from Mindanao to the Sulu Archipelago, northwest to the entire Palawan Archipelago, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-tawi and Sabah (North Borneo).

-The Sultan is the highest Imam in the Sulu Nation. He is the highest spiritual and supreme political authority in the kingdom​

-The Holy Qur’an is the basis of the constitutional law also known as the Shariah Law.
